Tsugaike: ticket vs valley pass, gates and beginners

Opens 1 Dec 2026. An adult day is $63 (¥9,800), $8 (¥1,300) below the valley pass, with a broad beginner slope, Epic access and a backcountry gate.

Tsugaike suits beginners, families and anyone who wants one big mountain on one ticket. An adult day is $63 (¥9,800) from 12 Dec 2026 to 22 Mar 2027, $8 (¥1,300) below the valley pass for one adult day, and by price the pass wins only for children. The resort opens on 1 Dec 2026 and has no night skiing this season.

Dollar figures use about ¥155 to US$1 and are rounded; you pay in yen, so check the rate.

Is Tsugaike right for you?

Good for

  • Beginners: one guide describes a beginner slope about 1,200 m wide, and the valley page rates 50% of the terrain beginner.
  • Families: the Kids Park is 70 by 70 m, open 28 Dec to 22 Mar and closed Wednesdays. Preschoolers ride free with an adult.
  • Epic holders: Tsugaike is one of the ten valley resorts on the free 5-day ticket.

Not for

  • Night skiers: the resort cancelled night skiing for 2026-27.
  • Ikon holders: Hakuba is not on Ikon.
  • Steep-terrain hunters: 20% is advanced and the steepest slope is 35 degrees. Happo-One drops 1,071 m against Tsugaike’s 904 m.
  • Anyone who needs an English site: the resort’s English toggle loads no content, and the staff English level is not stated.

The top is 1,704 m and the base 800 m. The valley page lists 1 gondola and 13 chairlifts and a 50/30/20 split of beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain. Course counts differ: 10 on the resort page, 11 on the valley page.

How do you get from Tokyo to Tsugaike?

Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano, about 80 minutes on the fastest train, then the Alpico express bus, about 70 minutes to Hakuba. The resort’s access page also lists a local Alpico route from Hakuba Station via Happo to Tsugaike Kogen, with no fare or timetable.

In 2025-26 the Alpico express from Nagano to Hakuba cost $23 to $25 (¥3,500 to ¥3,800) one way, depending on the stop, and one guide puts Tsugaike at $21 (¥3,200). The 2026-27 fare is unclear right now, and a September 2026 report said the timetable was not yet out. Alpico is a private line, so a rail pass may not cover it: JR Pass for Tokyo, Hakuba and Kyoto: worth it? Other routes are in Tokyo to ski resorts.

Valley shuttle Line T serves Tsugaike, and non-holders pay about $5 (¥800) a ride, per a 2025-26 timetable. By car, Parking 2 is free, about 500 m from the Eve gondola.

Tsugaike ticket or the valley pass?

For one adult day, buy Tsugaike’s own ticket: $63 (¥9,800) against $72 (¥11,100) for the valley pass, a saving of $8 (¥1,300), about 12%.

  • 2 days: $110 (¥17,400) against $140 (¥21,800), a saving of $28 (¥4,400), about 20%. Tsugaike’s days are consecutive. The pass takes any 2 days in 4.
  • Tsugaike plus Happo-One: one day at each, at $63 (¥9,800) a window ticket between 19 Dec and 22 Mar, costs $125 (¥19,600), $14 (¥2,200) less than the pass’s 2 days.
  • A child: the pass is cheaper, $41 (¥6,400) against $45 (¥7,000). The pass lists ages 6 to 12 and Tsugaike lists elementary-school children, which this page treats as the same group.
  • What the pass adds: any resort on the same day and the free valley shuttle.

Before you book Buy the valley pass only if you will change resorts on the same day or ride with children; for one resort, Tsugaike’s own ticket costs less.

Is Tsugaike on Epic?

Yes, through the valley. It is one of ten resorts on the free 5-consecutive-day ticket for Epic, Epic Local and Epic Australia holders, with no blackout dates listed. Redeem it at a designated ticket window with your pass (and photo ID if asked), and keep the physical card, since a mobile pass cannot ride the lifts. Terms are in Ikon and Epic passes in Japan.

Riding a board?

  • A leash is mandatory for snowboards across Hakuba Valley, and riding sitting on the board is banned.
  • TG Parks is Tsugaike’s park. Its 2026-27 status is not announced. Last season’s park opened 9 Jan 2026, per the park operator.
  • One rider guide says the tree zone needs a briefing, a waiver and an armband; the resort page does not list it.

What do the rules say about leaving the piste?

Tsugaike has a gate. It is one of five Hakuba Valley resorts that allow backcountry access, and only through a gate. The valley’s safety page asks you to submit the Mountain-Climbing Registration Form before you buy lift tickets, in person at a designated window or online, and to carry a transceiver, probe and shovel. At avalanche danger level 3, inexperienced skiers should stay in bounds. Rescue costs are billed privately, with no figure given.

Tsugaike’s own rule page could not be opened, and no gate location, gate hours or registration hours are found. Ask at the ticket window.

Safety Never ride deep powder or trees alone. Beyond the boundary, patrol does not control the terrain. See Backcountry & safety.

Is the 2026-27 snow looking good?

The 2026-27 outlook for Honshu is weaker than for Hokkaido. The Japan Meteorological Agency’s September outlook (unconfirmed figures) gives Honshu’s Sea of Japan side a 50% chance of below-normal snowfall, and a snow-forecast site rates Honshu below average to average. The valley page stresses heavy snowfall but gives no measurement. The resort has confirmed a 1 Dec 2026 opening but not a closing date. See When is Japow?

What about rental, food and a bad-weather day?

The rental page lists 4 shops and no prices. For reference prices see Japan ski rental cost 2026-27. The facility page lists 17 food outlets with hours, mostly in Japanese.

No onsen near Tsugaike is found; the resort pages list only a foot bath at Tsugaike Yokocho in Village Tsugaike, with no price, hours or tattoo rule. For a non-skiing hour, the Eve gondola sells sightseeing rides at the window: adults $19 (¥2,890) one way or $34 (¥5,200) return.
