Rent or bring? Japan ski gear, decided
Rent unless you own gear and your airline's bag charge is below the rental bill. Rental prices, ANA and JAL rules, takkyubin costs.
Rent at the resort unless you already own gear and your airline’s charge for the bag is smaller than the rental bill. One 2026-27 price list puts a standard ski or board with boots at $61 (¥9,500) for a day and $145 (¥22,200) for three. ANA reportedly waives its oversize charge on some routes, and a courier can move the bag onward for roughly $10 to $34 (¥1,500 to ¥5,220), depending on the guide.
Dollar figures convert at ¥155 to US$1, rounded. You pay in yen, so check the rate.
How do you decide: rent or bring?
Bring your own gear only when three things line up. You already own it. The airline’s extra charge for the bag, both ways, is smaller than the rental bill for your ski days. And you are willing to move a long bag between trains and hotels, or to pay a courier to do it.
| Lean | Your situation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rent | You own no skis or board | Nothing to carry, nothing to buy |
| Bring | You own gear, and your ANA route waives the oversize charge | The bag adds no oversize fee |
| Compare | You own gear, and your airline charges per item | Set the fee against the rental bill below |
| Compare closely | You ski one to three days | The rental bill is at its smallest; the bag charge is not |
Rental grows with every ski day and the bag charge does not. Day one of standard rental is $61 (¥9,500), and days two and three together add only $82 (¥12,700), so longer trips lean towards bringing your own.
Where is the break-even for a three-day trip?
Standard rental for three days is $145 (¥22,200). Courier forwarding is reported at $10 to $16 (¥1,500 to ¥2,500) per bag by one guide, while Yamato’s ski-bag rates in another are $24 (¥3,680) Tokyo to Nagano and $34 (¥5,220) to Hokkaido. The guide does not say whether the lower range is per direction, so the sums below assume it is, and charge it twice.
| Option | Courier cost per leg | Your own gear beats rental if the airline charges, both ways, under |
|---|---|---|
| Carry it yourself | none | $145 (¥22,200) |
| Courier, low | $10 (¥1,500) | $125 (¥19,200) |
| Courier, high | $16 (¥2,500) | $110 (¥17,200) |
| Yamato ski bag | $24 (¥3,680) | $96 (¥14,840) |
So with the courier at the Yamato ski-bag rate, a $96 (¥14,840) airline charge is where bringing your own stops beating rental. If the courier price is per bag for the round trip, the break-even moves up by the courier fee.
Clothes are a separate sum. Your own jacket and pants travel in normal luggage, so the clothing rental below matters only if you own none.
What does ski rental cost per day?
A standard ski or board with boots costs $61 (¥9,500) a day, per one rental provider’s 2026-27 adult rates in a 2026 cost guide. A set is skis or a board with boots; jacket or pants are priced per item.
| Item | 1 day | 3 days |
|---|---|---|
| Standard set | $61 (¥9,500) | $145 (¥22,200) |
| Premium set | $76 (¥11,800) | $180 (¥28,200) |
| Jacket or pants | $25 (¥3,800) | $50 (¥7,800) |
| Helmet | $21 (¥3,300) | $36 (¥5,600) |
The three-day standard rate averages $48 (¥7,400) a day. Premium adds $15 (¥2,300) on a single day and $39 (¥6,000) over three. The source does not say what Premium includes.
This is one shop’s price list, not a market rate. Two more data points come from resort pages. Hakuba47 lists a ski set or a board and boots set at $42 (¥6,500) a day, with no season label. Rusutsu lists board and boots at $70 (¥10,800) a day. Compare before you book.
What does a full ski day cost with rental?
Take Niseko’s official adult one-day ticket, $87 (¥13,500) in peak season (24 December to 28 February) or $57 (¥8,800) in the early and spring periods, and add the table above: standard gear, jacket and pants, helmet.
- Peak day: about $220 (¥33,900) before food and lessons.
- Early or spring day: about $190 (¥29,200).
The rental kit alone is $130 (¥20,400), about 1.5 times the peak lift ticket. Lessons are not in the total; Rusutsu and Nozawa prices are in Snowboarding in Japan. Lift prices for Niseko, Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen sit side by side in Passes & prices.
Can you fly with your own skis or snowboard?
Yes, as checked sporting equipment. The rules belong to the airline; ANA and JAL are covered here.
- ANA counts skis and boards as sporting equipment, charged as checked baggage. Its pages are available only through search summaries, which say the oversize charge is waived for 158 to 292 cm total linear size on some routes, so check whether yours is one. Items over 292 cm are not accepted, and ANA asks you to check by phone for anything over 203 cm. Packing items separately can mean an excess charge per item.
- JAL has run a limited-time offer for up to two sets under 203 cm total, boots in the same bag. Whether it applies to your flight now is unknown.
ANA’s per-item warning and JAL’s boots-in-the-bag offer both favour one combined bag. Other carriers are not covered, so price the bag on your own booking.
Is forwarding the bag by takkyubin worth it?
Forwarding costs roughly $10 to $34 (¥1,500 to ¥5,220) a bag, between a sixth and a half of a standard rental day. Takkyubin is Japan’s courier luggage service, and a courier such as Yamato can send a bag to your hotel. A 2026 guide reports about $10 to $16 (¥1,500 to ¥2,500) per bag, and Yamato’s ski-bag rates run $24 to $34 (¥3,680 to ¥5,220). At $10 to $16 (¥1,500 to ¥2,500) one bag costs about a sixth to a quarter of a standard rental day; at $34 (¥5,220) it is about half.
Size limit and delivery time for ski bags are unconfirmed, so ask your hotel or the courier before you send anything. The Shinkansen size rule is in Can you take a snowboard on the Shinkansen?
Will rental shops have your size, and do you need to book?
Rentals are widespread, and in most cases you can rent without booking. A snow-report site’s guide says to pre-book in peak weeks. At Niseko that is the 24 December to 28 February pricing season, and one guide calls New Year to February the busy period in Hakuba.
Sizes and availability vary by shop, and no source says how well shops cover large boot sizes, tall jackets or wide feet. Ask the shop for your sizes before you rely on rental.
For powder days, a snow-report site suggests wide powder skis or a powder board, and eyewear with high light transmission for overcast skies. The price list above shows only Standard and Premium tiers; which shops rent powder-specific skis is unconfirmed.
A helmet is on the rental list at $21 (¥3,300) a day. Niseko’s Rules page says everyone in the backcountry “should wear a helmet and carry an avalanche beacon”, which is advice, not a rule. Whether shops rent beacons, probes and shovels is unconfirmed, and Backcountry & safety sets out what each resort’s rules say about kit.
To verify Check your airline’s fee and size limits on your own booking, whether the JAL offer applies, the takkyubin price for ski bags, and whether your shop rents avalanche kit. Rental prices come from one provider; another Niseko shop lists lower figures for an unclear year.
Next step: price the bag on your ticket, price the rental for your ski days, and compare. Then set the total against the Japow hub’s pass and resort picks.
Questions
It comes down to your airline's bag charge. Standard rental is $145 (¥22,200) for three days on one provider's 2026-27 list. If your airline charges less than that for the bag, or waives the oversize charge (ANA is reported to on some routes), bringing your own is cheaper. Check the fee on your own ticket.
Not always. Most places rent without a booking, but a snow-report site advises booking ahead in peak weeks. Niseko's peak pricing season runs 24 December to 28 February.
Yes, at the one provider with a published list: jacket or pants $25 (¥3,800) each a day, helmet $21 (¥3,300) a day. Other shops may charge differently.
Yes, by takkyubin. A 2026 guide reports about $10 to $16 (¥1,500 to ¥2,500) per bag, but Yamato's ski-bag rates run higher: about $24 (¥3,680) Tokyo to Nagano or Niigata and $34 (¥5,220) to Hokkaido, per an undated guide. Ask your hotel or the courier for the quote, size limits and delivery time.
