Anime and manga trips in Japan run on three things: which district to shop in, which museum is open on your day, and which ticket must be bought weeks ahead. Ghibli Museum tickets go on sale on the 10th of the month before, and Ghibli Park sells two months ahead, so mark both dates.
What to explore
Start with Akihabara for first-timers: a three hour route that begins at noon, what to skip, and how tax-free works after 1 November 2026, when you pay the price with 10% tax and claim it back at departure.

To verify Toei Animation Museum hours are unclear right now, and Pokemon Center Mega Tokyo states no entry method on its store page. Check each official page before you go.
Quick answers
Which district is best for a first anime and manga trip?
Akihabara, after reading the tax-free change of 1 November 2026. Add Nakano Broadway for used goods, where Mandarake lists 12:00 to 20:00 every day. Book Ghibli tickets weeks ahead, because they go on sale on fixed dates.
Do I need tickets for the Ghibli Museum?
Yes. All admission is by advance reservation, with no door sales. Next month's tickets go on sale at 10:00 JST on the 10th, and the official page lists the Lawson Ticket English site for overseas buyers.
Is tax-free still possible for figures and manga?
Yes, as a refund. From 1 November 2026 you pay the price with 10% tax, then claim it back at departure, within 90 days of buying. Figures and manga are ordinary goods under the same rules. A $32 (¥5,000) minimum per store per day is reported by secondary guides, not the official leaflet.
