Chugoku travel guide: Hiroshima, Miyajima, San'in coast

Hiroshima and Miyajima in 3 days, Okayama as the rail hub, Matsue, Izumo and Tottori on the San'in side. Passes, fees, hours and winter closures.

Chugoku pairs Hiroshima’s Peace Park and Miyajima’s floating torii with Okayama’s garden and the shrine towns of the San’in coast. Three days cover Hiroshima and Miyajima; five reach Okayama plus Matsue, Izumo or Tottori by limited express. Spring and autumn are the best seasons. The Sea of Japan side is slower to reach, wetter in winter and short of seasonal sights from January. Official data is thinnest for Hagi, Tsuwano, Daisen and the Shimanami, and gaps are marked in place.

Best for: a first Hiroshima visit, Peace Park and Miyajima, a rail stop between Kansai and Kyushu, shrine and castle towns, Shimanami cycling, winter snow crab.

Dollar figures use about ¥155 to US$1 and are rounded; you pay in yen, so check the rate. Sums are converted from the yen total. Shinkansen and limited express fares are secondary figures, so read them as “about”.

Winter 2026-27 in detail

Winter brings lights, oysters and crab; the Tottori Sand Museum and some seasonal sights close.

  • Lights: Hiroshima Dreamination is listed on Peace Boulevard from early November 2026 to early January 2027. The 2025-26 edition ran 7 Nov to 3 Jan, 18:00 to 22:30. This season’s exact dates and hours are unconfirmed.
  • Oysters: October to March is the general window. The Miyajima Oyster Festival is held in February by the ferry port, free; 2026 was listed for 14 and 15 Feb. The 2025 edition was cancelled for poor oyster growth, and the 2027 dates are unconfirmed.
  • Crab: Tottori’s Matsuba crab season runs roughly November to March. Book November, January and February early.
  • Shut or reduced: the Tsuwano chairlift (open 1 Mar to 30 Nov only), SL Yamaguchi trains, the Iwami Ginzan Okubo-Mabu tour and the Tottori Sand Museum. The Mazda Museum closes 26 Dec 2026 to noon on 5 Jan 2027 and 8 to 26 Feb 2027.
  • Skiing: Daisen White Resort listed 20 Dec to 22 Mar in a past season. Lift prices and 2026-27 dates are not found.

How do you get there and around?

Take the Shinkansen: Tokyo to Hiroshima in about 3 h 54, Tokyo to Okayama in about 3 h 17. Tottori and Matsue trains leave from Okayama.

The slower Hikari plus Sakura combination takes about 4 h 50 and costs about $120 (¥18,710). Hiroshima Airport is about 51 km from the city with no train: the limousine bus takes about 50 minutes and costs $9 (¥1,400), and door to door the flight is about 4 hours. Yakumo seats are all reserved. For the 2026 JR Pass price change, see What changed in Japan in 2026; for how to compare a pass with single fares, see the JR Pass answer.

Around Hiroshima, tram route 2 reaches Miyajimaguchi in about 35 minutes; the JR Sanyo line takes about 28 minutes for roughly $3 (¥420). The ferry from there takes about 10 minutes.

Which pass, if any?

A pass pays only on a loop; a Hiroshima and Miyajima trip does not need one.

Which pass, if any?

Sanyo-San'in Area Pass$150 (¥23,000) adult, $74 (¥11,500) child7 in a rowKansai or Hakata to Okayama, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Tottori, Shimane; Sanyo Shinkansen; JR ferry; JR busesTokaido and Kyushu Shinkansen; Miyajima visitor tax
Hiroshima-Yamaguchi Area Pass$97 (¥15,000) adult, $48 (¥7,500) child5Hakata to Yamaguchi and Hiroshima; JR ferryVisitor tax, paid at boarding

The Sanyo-San’in pass is for foreign passports with temporary visitor status. A $150 (¥23,000) pass needs a loop, not a line. On secondary fares, Hiroshima to Okayama, Tottori and back, Matsue and back, then Hiroshima again is six legs and about $225 (¥34,800), counting each Shinkansen leg at about $39 (¥6,000). This is an estimate. The Okayama to Tottori train runs partly on Chizu Express, which the pass may not cover, and the pass page does not say whether Nozomi, Mizuho or Yakumo count. No Hakata fare is found, so the Hiroshima-Yamaguchi pass has no break-even here.

Nozomi coverage on the national JR Pass is unclear: one source says it is not covered, others report a supplement of $32 to $42 (¥4,960 to ¥6,500). Check the JR page for your train before you count the pass. A rental car has no sourced comparison with rail. The San’in side faces more rain and snow, so read the winter rental answer before booking wheels.

Where should you stay?

Stay in Hiroshima for Peace Park and Miyajima, Okayama as the rail hub and Matsue for the shrine and castle trip.

Okayama is where the Hiroshima, Tottori and Matsue trains meet. Iwakuni and Onomichi times from Hiroshima are not found.

Tottori is the place to stay for the dunes: a local bus takes about 22 minutes and costs $2 (¥380) each way. IC cards may not be accepted on local buses in Tottori Prefecture (unconfirmed), so carry coins.

Shimanami Kaido is a roughly 70 km hilly cycle route from Onomichi to Imabari, which is on Shikoku. Public rental is per day. One rental site lists a city or cross bike at $19 (¥3,000) and an electric city bike at $26 (¥4,000), while another 2026 guide gives much lower figures. An electric sports bike runs $45 to $52 (¥7,000 to ¥8,000) because two sources disagree, and one adds a $32 (¥5,000) deposit forfeited if the bike is not returned to its origin terminal. Main terminals open 08:00 to 19:00, 18:00 in winter; island terminals 09:00 to 17:00. The rental site lists a limited Onomichi to Imabari ferry on 16 days between 3 Oct and 29 Nov 2026. Secondary guides put the ride at 4 to 10 hours; stage lengths and the cyclist bridge toll after 31 Mar 2026 are not found.

To verify Rental prices, e-bike terminals and the bridge toll conflict between sources. Check the Shimanami Cycle page before you book.

What are the highlights?

Hiroshima’s Peace Park and Itsukushima Shrine anchor the list, with Korakuen, Matsue Castle and Izumo Taisha beyond.

The Peace Museum’s early (07:30 to 08:30) and evening slots need an online reservation, and the web ticket is advised; Hiroshima and Nagasaki museums has the booking detail. The park is a tram ride of about 15 minutes from Hiroshima Station (line 2 or 6, to Genbaku-Domu Mae). Walk to the great torii at low tide; one guide says it looks afloat when the tide is above about 250 cm. The shrine cannot be entered after dark, though the torii is lit until 23:00. The ropeway page lists reservation-required dates in October and November, none in December; a May 2026 notice mentions lifting Mt Misen entry restrictions, details not found. One guide says the pagoda scaffolding is due down in December 2026. Fees and hours for Itsukushima and Izumo Taisha match Western Japan temples and shrines.

Matsue’s moat boat runs 09:00 to 16:00 from October to February; no fare found. The Izumoshi bus to Izumo Taisha takes about 30 minutes for $3 (¥470 to ¥530); the Okubo-Mabu tour at Iwami Ginzan does not run in winter, and the Oda Station bus, $5 (¥760), is not covered by the JR Pass. The Sand Museum’s official site shows it open to 3 Jan 2027, then closed for an exhibit rebuild; a 2026 guide gave about 5 Jan to 23 Apr. Izumo’s gods are said to gather in the tenth lunar month, usually November; the exact Kamiarisai dates were not found.

Yamaguchi has no official fees or hours for Hagi, Tsuwano or Akiyoshido Cave. Guides report a Hagi to Tsuwano bus of about 100 minutes for $14 (¥2,220), a Tsuwano chairlift at $5 (¥700) and Akiyoshido tickets from $8 to $12 (¥1,300 to ¥1,900).

Three plans: 3 days in Hiroshima and Miyajima, 4 days in Okayama, Matsue and Izumo, and 1 to 2 days to Tottori.

Itinerary 1: Hiroshima and Miyajima, 3 days

  1. Day 1: Tokyo to Hiroshima by Nozomi, about $125 (¥19,440). Peace Park and Museum, $1 (¥200); book the web ticket, and note the 18:00 close from December to February. Dreamination in the evening if it is running.
  2. Day 2: Tram route 2 to Miyajimaguchi, ferry, Itsukushima Shrine. Be on the island by mid-afternoon in December: the shrine closes at 17:00.
  3. Day 3: Shinkansen to Okayama, about $38 to $40 (¥5,940 to ¥6,260), Korakuen $3 (¥500), then Tokyo in about 3 h 17 for about $105 (¥16,070).

Sum: about $285 to $290 (¥44,300 to ¥44,600) for the Shinkansen, four tram legs, the ferry with visitor tax, fees and two nights of Hiroshima lodging tax at $1 (¥200). Beds and food are extra.

Itinerary 2: Okayama, Matsue and Izumo, 4 days

  1. Day 1: Okayama. Korakuen, $3 (¥500).
  2. Day 2: Kurashiki canal quarter, free; boat $5 (¥700), but not on the second Monday.

Itinerary 3: Tottori dunes, 1 to 2 days from Okayama

Super Inaba both ways ($35 (¥5,400) each) and the dune bus both ways ($2 (¥380) each) come to about $75 (¥11,560), or $80 (¥12,360) with the Sand Museum while it is open. Re-check the Sand Museum dates before you book.

What are the rules, risks and costs?

Costs are small but stack: a ferry tax and a lodging tax apply, and the Peace Park is a place of remembrance.

  • Peace Park and Museum: a place of remembrance. Guides say flash is restricted in some exhibits and Cenotaph access may be restricted on 6 August. No official etiquette page is found.
  • Miyajima: the visitor tax is added to the ferry fare on the way over, and residents and school trips are exempt. Miyajima deer rules are not found.

Safety The Miyajima ropeway can stop for high wind or thunder. Typhoon season runs from late August to early October, but typhoons can come outside that window: the Mazda Museum shut on 26 Oct 2026 for one.

What are the rules, risks and costs?
CostAmount
Hiroden tram$2 (¥240) flat on the routes checked, paid on exit; child $1 (¥120)
Matsudai ferry$1 (¥200) each way; passes do not cover it

Quick answers

How many days does Chugoku need?

Three days covers Hiroshima and Miyajima. Five days adds Okayama plus Matsue and Izumo, or Tottori, by limited express. Secondary guides put the Shimanami ride at 4 to 10 hours, so add a day if you ride it.

Is Chugoku worth visiting in winter?

Yes around Hiroshima and Okayama, which are drier, with fewer sights closed. A weather guide says Hiroshima city rarely snows, while the northern mountains get heavy snow from December to March. The San'in coast loses the Tottori Sand Museum, the Tsuwano chairlift and SL Yamaguchi trains in winter.

Is a rail pass worth it for Chugoku?

Only for a loop. The Sanyo-San'in Area Pass is $150 (¥23,000) for 7 days and does not cover Tokyo to Shin-Osaka. On secondary fares, a Hiroshima, Tottori, Matsue and back loop adds up to about $225 (¥34,800), an estimate, and the Chizu Express section may not be covered.

How much does it cost to visit Miyajima?

A Matsudai ferry round trip is $3 (¥500) including the $1 (¥100) visitor tax, and Itsukushima Shrine is $2 (¥300), or $3 (¥500) with the Treasure Hall. The shrine closes at 17:00 in December. Passes cover the JR ferry but not the visitor tax.

Is there a lodging tax in Chugoku?

Hiroshima Prefecture charges $1 (¥200) per person per night from 1 Apr 2026 when the room rate is $39 (¥6,000) or more. Matsue charges $1 (¥200) per person per night, with stays under $32 (¥5,000) exempt. Rates for Okayama, Tottori and Yamaguchi are not found.

Will the Miyajima Oyster Festival run in 2027?

The 2027 dates are unconfirmed. It is held in February by the ferry port with free entry, and the 2026 edition was listed for 14 and 15 Feb. The 2025 edition was cancelled because oysters grew poorly, so wait for the 2027 dates before you plan around it.
