Can you take a snowboard on the Shinkansen?

Yes

Yes. JR East's guide reportedly allows 250 cm total and 30 kg on the Nagano routes. On the Tokaido line, past 160 cm you reserve a seat or pay.

Short answer

Yes. A board bag rides the Shinkansen under both operators, with one size line to watch. JR East, which runs the Tokyo to Nagano route for Hakuba, Nozawa and Myoko, reportedly allows 250 cm total and 30 kg per item, per a search summary of its guide. JR Central, on the Tokaido line, wants an oversized-baggage seat reservation or a fee once the bag passes 160 cm total.

Why

Each operator sets its own size rule. JR Central: up to 160 cm total (length plus width plus height) needs nothing. From 161 to 250 cm you reserve a seat with the oversized baggage area behind the last row, or pay $6 (¥1,000) without one. Over 250 cm is not allowed. Its page exempts sports equipment unless you want the oversized space, but it does not name skis or boards.

JR East: 250 cm total, 30 kg per item, and oversized luggage cannot be reserved. It is first come, first served, and the summary says space is limited in ski season.

What to do instead

Conditions

  • Add length, width and height of the packed bag. The total counts, not the length alone.
  • JR Central takes reservations only on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, none on conventional lines.
  • Ski-bag rules for the buses from Nagano to Hakuba and Nozawa are not verified. Ask the operator.
  • Dollar figures use about ¥155 to US$1 and are rounded; you pay in yen, so check the rate.
