Can you fly to Japan with your own skis or snowboard?

Yes

Yes on most airlines, as checked sporting equipment, but check yours. Fees and size limits vary; renting at the resort is the normal alternative.

Short answer

Yes, on most airlines; check yours. Airlines carry skis and boards as sporting equipment and checked baggage, but the fee and size limit depend on your airline and route. Add the airline’s bag fee and any forwarding cost, then compare the total with the rental days you need.

Why

Allowances and fees differ by carrier and route. ANA’s and JAL’s baggage pages are known here only through search summaries, so read your own carrier’s baggage page. Renting removes the baggage hassle, though sizes and availability vary.

What to do instead

  • Rent at the resort and fly with a smaller bag. One provider lists $61 (¥9,500) a day or $145 (¥22,200) for 3 days for skis or board plus boots, and a helmet adds $21 (¥3,300) a day (2026-27 base rates, a single provider, not an average).
  • Forward your bag by courier (takkyubin) to the hotel. A 2026 guide reports about $10 to $16 (¥1,500 to ¥2,500) per bag, while Yamato’s ski-bag rates are higher: about $24 (¥3,680) from Tokyo to Nagano or Niigata and $34 (¥5,220) to Hokkaido, per an undated guide. Add a day each way.

Conditions

  • ANA counts skis and boards as checked baggage. Search summaries of its page say it waives the oversize charge for 158 to 292 cm total linear size on some routes; confirm yours. Items over 292 cm are not accepted, and items over 203 cm should be checked by phone.
  • Packing items separately can mean an excess charge per item.
  • JAL has run a limited-time offer: up to 2 sets, under 203 cm total, boots in the same bag. Whether it applies now is unknown.
  • Dollar figures use about ¥155 to US$1 and are rounded; you pay in yen, so check the rate.
