Can you photograph maiko on Hanamikoji in Gion? What is allowed

Depends

Depends. The main street is reportedly open to photos; stopping or photographing maiko without permission is not. Private lanes are off limits.

Short answer

Depends: the street yes, the people no. Hanamikoji is reportedly open to photos, but Kyoto’s tourism guidance says do not stop, follow or photograph geiko or maiko without permission. Private lanes off the main street are closed to pass-through. For a portrait, book an experience.

Why

Gion is a residential area, and residents’ complaints produced the rules. Residents’ rules announced in 2019 reportedly ban photos on private streets. From spring 2024, signs on designated private lanes in Gion Southside ban walking through, with a reported $65 (¥10,000) fine. Hanamikoji and Shijo-dori stay open, and the 2019 reports name Shirakawa-dori and Sannen-zaka as public too. Kyoto’s guidance also asks visitors not to block the road and not to photograph children or residents.

What to do instead

  • Book a paid maiko photography plan or a maiko makeover experience. Both are set up for photos.
  • Gion Corner’s evening show lists a photo with a maiko afterwards in its winter programme (1 December to 11 March). Check the current programme.
  • Photograph streets and wooden facades, not people.

The Gion Corner show runs about an hour and includes maiko dance, tea ceremony, ikebana, koto, gagaku and kyogen. Regular shows start at 18:00 and 19:00.

Conditions

  • Do not stop, touch or follow geiko or maiko. Kyoto’s flyer for Southern Gionmachi lists detention or a fine for obstructing a path or stalking.
  • The fines on private lanes are reported, not clearly binding.
  • Ask permission on public streets too.

Dollar figures use about ¥155 to US$1 and are rounded; you pay in yen, so check the rate.
